Artificial intelligence is also used to detect falls in the elderly

Behind this technology is artificial intelligence: the start-up Mintt (Medical Intelligent Technologies) has developed this fall detection system called ISA.

In the offices of his start-up, equipped with a laboratory chamber, Eric Krzeslo, CEO of Mintt, describes how the system works: "ISA works with a 3D sensor. It's not a camera, it's a sensor that sees objects in three dimensions on the basis of an artificial intelligence that has been developed thanks to the accumulation of data that we have been able to do over the last few years. The artificial intelligence continuously analyses the environment: the floor, the furniture, the obstacles, the people, the behaviour, such as getting out of bed, a commotion, a fall. And depending on the circumstances, sends an alarm and relevant information to the doctor."

Falls are common among the elderly: they affect 30% of nursing home residents. At the La Rose residence, one or two falls are detected per week among the 95 residents. On average, in a nursing home with 80 beds, 400 falls are recorded per year. But 70% of them are not detected by the staff. Particularly at night, there are only a limited number of geriatric or nursing home staff, so a fall victim can remain on the floor for a very long time - too long - before a member of the nursing staff comes to pick him or her up. Falls often result in fractures, especially hip fractures. All this represents a high cost for the RIZIV: hospital care, revalidation, ...
