It is estimated that up to 70% of patients in hospitals and nursing homes fall at least once a year, with dramatic and costly consequences, including physical injury and loss of independence.
Mintt is a Belgian company that develops innovative 3D analysis solutions for the detection and prevention of falls among patients in hospitals and nursing homes. To tackle this very serious problem, Mintt has developed ISA (Intelligent Sensing for Ageing), consisting of a 3D sensor and its own AI-based analysis algorithms. The next generation of Mintt's solution will use Microsoft's state-of-the-art 3D time-of-flight (ToF) sensor.
Recent advances in 3D vision are having a huge impact in the healthcare sector, giving professionals the ability to remotely monitor patients with accurate spatial analysis and opening up new markets for companies and investors.
ISA, the innovative solution, has already helped thousands of patients in leading university hospitals such as Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc, revalidation centres, retirement homes and assisted living facilities throughout Belgium.
Thanks to Microsoft's state-of-the-art 3D Time of Flight (ToF) sensor technology and the Azure Cloud Platform, Mintt will be able to leverage Azure AI Cognitive Services to facilitate the deployment of AI-based solutions. Mintt is equipping itself to develop and serve its customers worldwide in a cost-effective manner while ensuring a unique quality of service. The company has developed a strong expertise in behavioural analysis and understanding falls, gathering over 100,000 hours of data capture and thousands of cases analysed.
Daniel Bar, Head of Microsoft's Azure Depth Platform
"Microsoft's 3D sensing technology enables patient tracking with unprecedented accuracy while preserving patient privacy. Microsoft selected Mintt as a priority partner for the Azure Depth Platform program in recognition of their innovation and pioneering solution in the Belgian market, and we look forward to seeing the fruits of our collaboration grow Mintt's solution globally."
Eric Krzeslo, CEO of Mintt
"We are delighted to be working with the team at Microsoft on their core 3D sensor. Microsoft's Azure Depth platform is the perfect complement to our AI-based fall detection and prevention solution. It will enable us to strengthen our sustainable and repeatable business model for the direct benefit of our customers and their patients: teaching hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and assisted living facilities."
Visit of Minister Willy Borsus and support from public authorities
During his visit to Mintt's offices in Charleroi, Willy Borsus, Walloon Minister for the Economy, Innovation and the Digital Economy, praised the company's continued success and said: "The history and innovative concept, both medical and societal, of the MintT company demonstrate once again how Wallonia is full of talent, knowledge and know-how. I am delighted that groups as important as Microsoft, both in terms of technological innovation and applications linked to the health field, are very interested in the work of our companies. This is a recognition and certainly a great promise for the future," says Willy Borsus.
Mintt benefits from regional support via Sambrinvest and the support of the WSL incubator and was recently rewarded by Digital Wallonia with the Acceleration Startup Award 2021. "Investing in Mintt, a leading player in the Silver Economy, means investing in major societal trends: putting technology at the service of the elderly in an efficient and human way. It was an obvious choice for Sambrinvest to support them," says Fabrice Carosella, investment manager at Sambrinvest.
Strengthening its financial structure
Mintt has also recently strengthened its financial structure by almost 3 million euros via a capital increase and the support of its private and public financial partners. This financing will enable Mintt to strengthen its position as market leader by accelerating its growth in Belgium and internationally and by reinforcing its technological lead.
